A good place to start is actually the lore section of the army books. I recommend reading 4: The Empire, High Elves, Lizardmen, and Tomb Kings. Those 4 will give you a very broad overview of what the world and most of the races are all about. And then you can branch off from there if a certain army tickles your fancy.
